Domestic violence has been in the public conversation recently with President Donald Trump coming to the defense of his aide Rob Porter who's former wives accused him of violent behavior. According to Slate.com, a group of women with the Jeanne Geiger Crisis Center in Massachusetts is working in communities to save lives with an innovative program to help prevent fatal domestic violence incidents by zeroing in on cases where abusing individuals have exhibited signs that they might turn to deadly violence.

Program Helps Survivors of Domestic Violence

Since the 2000s, this program has apparently done well and the center is now trying to raise funds to train other communities to use this kind of approach to prevent murders stemming from domestic violence. With such an approach, the center’s leaders say they are also hoping to give the public a renewed understanding of domestic violence. They are essentially advocating for more help for survivors – not just to help them get out of abusive scenarios, but also to get their lives back on track and placing the onus on abusers, not victims, to put an end to the abuse.

The church shooting in Sutherland Springs, Texas, is an example of how a domestic situation blew up out of control and affected an entire town and the nation. This incident is an example of how domestic violence can take down not just the abused, but also innocent bystanders. To prevent such tragic situations, the Geiger Center puts together a Domestic Violence High-Risk Team, which is a coalition of representatives from police agencies, health care providers, shelters, and prosecutors who are usually involved in the process.

The 1994 Violence Against Women Act has also led to significant decreases in domestic violence incidents and related homicides. Cities have also taken measures recently. In New York City, for example, Mayor Bill de Blasio started a task force to combat domestic violence and help those who have been abused.

Fighting Domestic Violence Charges

There is no question that women and children must be protected from domestic violence and abuse. It is also important to recognize that men could also become victims of domestic violence. They should also receive similar protections in order to prevent tragic situations that could arise. At the time, it is crucial as a society to acknowledge that a number of individuals are unfairly and inaccurately charged with domestic violence. This often deals a devastating blow to those who are charged, ripping them apart from their families including their children.

If you are facing domestic violence charges, you may be slapped with a restraining order and may not be able to go into your own home or see your own kids.
